Help For Alcoholism: How To Get Started
Watching someone you love fight the battle with alcoholism can be a crippling process for any family.
It can affect anyone, and getting help for someone in the midst of the disease can be discouraging. There are things you can do, just be prepared that it may take a long time before recovery.
The first thing you need to do when dealing with an alcoholic is to educate yourself. Understanding the disease will help you become a more effective advocate for your family member. It will also help you when it is time to be proactive in getting help.
If you are not an experienced alcoholic counselor, there isn't much you will know how to say. Get help from a professional, or transport them to AA. Find a place where your friend or family member can get access to professional help.
One of the most difficult parts of being involved with an alcoholic is watching them self-destruct. Whether it is a spouse, child or parent, you must distance yourself from the individual. This means that you need to understand that they are fighting a disease, and their behavior under the influence is not the real person.
As difficult as it may be for some families, you must not enable an alcoholic. This means that you give them a way to keep purchasing alcohol. Absolutely do not pay their bills for them, give them money, or purchase more alcohol. Let them feel the natural consequences of drinking their money away.
Set rules when dealing with an alcoholic. Make clear boundaries and consequences. Make sure that your rules and consequences are manageable. Don't give a consequence that you won't be able to follow through with, or they won't respect the boundaries.
Interventions are effective in some cases, but not always. Set up an intervention if you think it will be effective. This is a time when all the family members gather and tell the alcoholic there is a problem. Sometimes when faced with family and friends (in a firm but caring manner) it will make the individual realize there is a serious problem.
Once your family member has realized there is a problem and wants help you may need to place them in a detox/rehab center. This will often not be until the individual has reached rock bottom. If you enroll them in a program before they are ready, there is a likelier chance of relapse.
There are no easy answers for those who deal with alcohol. There are places families can go for support, such as Al Anon. These are often great outlets, since the problem is often a private matter.
Be patient, and persistent. There is hope for alcoholics. Many experience recovery, but it is a long road, riddled with bumps and setbacks. Help your family member by being a consistent and dependable source of sobriety.
